âNo way,â I say. âSmithy and Lewis wouldn't do that.â
âWouldn't they?â snaps Mason. âDo you know how much they could get for a story like this?â
I shift my weight from one foot to the other. âThey wouldn't.â
âThat photo was taken at the villa, and aside from you, me and Tim, they were the only people there.â Mason glances down at his phone. âGreat. I got about two minutes to call Shauna back before she's on the next plane out here.â His phone buzzes again. âAnd now it's my agent. Fuck!â
âCalm down,â says Callie. âLet's just deal with one thing at a time, okay? Go call Shauna. She's probably freaking out.â She tries to take his arm.
Mason pulls away and raises his phone so we can see him turn it off. âNah. You know what? Fuck them. Fuck you all.â He turns to Callie. âI've tried so hard to be betterâto be perfectâfor you, and nothing I do is good enough. I'm outta here.â He storms off across the parking lot.
âWhere are you going?â Callie calls after him, her voice quivering.
âTo a fucking bar,â he says, glancing over his shoulder. âMight as well, huh?â
Callie sighs, her eyes glistening. She lowers her gaze and when I put my arm around her, she trembles beneath my touch.
âAre you okay?â I ask.
She starts to nod, then shakes her head, her mouth twisted into that face people make when they're really trying not to cry.
I pull her closer. âSo, what, he's drunk again?â
âI don't know. He swears he isn't, but the way he's acting...I don't know what to think.â She rubs her eyes. âWas it really that bad? In Ibiza?â
I nod and give her the details. âI didn't think he was gonna make it.â
âOh, God,â she whispers, covering her face with her hands.
I give her another squeeze. I wish I could tell her everything will be all right, but I don't have it in me to lie right now. Even if I decide not to go to the police, it won't matter if Mason carries on like this. If he can't get himself under control, it's only a matter of time before the detectives start questioning his behavior. Maybe I should say something, if only to save him from himself.
Callie leans into me and we stand still for a moment, both lost in our own thoughts. Then she gives me a weak smile and we start walking toward the trailers.
âI don't understand,â she says, linking her arm through mine. âI didn't realize Mason was struggling so much. He seemed fine. And he's not stupid. It's not like he didn't know he'd be in trouble if he showed up wasted, especially after last week. And don't you think it's weird that he just happens to show up drunk, and then that story gets released?â
âKind of. What are you saying?â
âI don't know, but itâs a strange coincidence.â
âTrue, but it's not exactly a stretch to think that Mase would start drinking again with all the weird shit that's been going on.
